Which class should I take?

Which class should I take?

Hi everyone! I’m settled into my DC/Silver Spring digs and getting ready to film some videos for you! In the meantime, my classes start this week and there are a lot to choose from (a very good problem to have) so I thought I’d do a little introduction and tell you a bit about them so you can decide which class is right for you!  I find yoga class names to be confusing at best so while I can’t promise that my definitions will be the same as other teachers’ definitions, maybe this can help you navigate your local studio as well! For those of you who don’t want to or can’t watch the video (though you are missing some awesome awkward laughing) here are some quick descriptions of my classes and what you might expect when you attend them.   I truly believe that you can take any class you like as long as you can do it without hurting yourself (and/or are confident enough to opt out if something isn’t appropriate for you – what really makes you an advanced yogi in my opinion).  You $$ buys the same mat space as anyone else! Yoga Fundamentals: this class is for beginners, especially those who have never done yoga before or maybe did it once 10 years ago.  We’ll start slowly, learning how to sit, stand and find out neutral positions on the mat.  Then we’ll break down basic poses – plank, lunges, downward dog, warrior II, tree, triangle etc…nothing fancy – but foundations for the asana practice.  We’ll go over sun salutation modifications and prepare for basics...

Schedule Updates and News

This has been a really awesome summer for me and for Supportive Yoga.  I’ve been teaching three classes a week at Golden Heart Yoga, including two very successful Yoga for Larger Bodies miniseries!  When I started working with Golden Heart Yoga, I wasn’t really sure what would happen once the summer was over, but I’m so happy to announce that I will continue to work with them in the fall and beyond! The biggest news is that because of the overwhelming response to the Yoga for Larger Bodies miniseries (due, at least in part, to the amazing Washington Post article), we are making it a permanent class!  The class will be held on Tuesday nights at 7:15pm at Golden Heart Yoga and it will be a drop-in class.  Without the structure of the miniseries, I will be able plan more flexible (pun intended) sequences and work on customizing the practice to whomever happens to be in class that day.  My larger-bodied students will have a  class that caters specifically to them for as long as they’d like to practice with me.  I cannot wait to get started.  If you’ve been attending the miniseries classes, thank you!  Please keep coming and bring your friends.  Let’s make sure this c;lass is sustainable!  The first class will be held on September 3rd (the Tuesday after labor day.) I will also be moving my general group classes at Golden Heart to Tuesdays and Thursdays starting September 10th.  We had a big schedule shuffle and I’ll be taking over the Tuesday and Thursday 6pm Gentle/Beginner Hatha classes.  If you are unsure of when I’m...
Group Class Schedule Update

Group Class Schedule Update

New group classes are starting this coming Monday!  I will be teaching the Monday and Wednesday 6:00 pm class at Golden Heart Yoga in DC’s Petworth neighborhood starting Monday, June 10th.  These classes are listed as Hatha Yoga (all levels) and I truly mean that.  I love teaching students at all levels, from a brand new beginner to someone who has been practicing for 50 years.  As usual, we will incorporate props, breath work, yoga philosophy and fun into the practice.  Golden Heart Yoga is a great little neighborhood studio – very comfortable and welcoming. Also, don’t forget about my upcoming workshop series at Golden Heart Yoga – Yoga for Larger Bodies.  If you are planning to join me for these awesome classes, please sign up in advance.  You get a significant discount – 4 classes for the price of 3 (helpful for the summer when you might be traveling!) I’m very happy to be teaching a regular group class schedule again.  If you like my blog, you’ll love my class.  Please check my Yoga with Annie page for all my current offerings, including my regular classes, classes I’m subbing and other ways to practice yoga with me.  Please feel free to email me at annie@supportiveyoga.com if you have any...
New Yoga for Larger Bodies Miniseries at Golden Heart Yoga

New Yoga for Larger Bodies Miniseries at Golden Heart Yoga

Announcing a new Supportive Yoga Miniseries: Yoga for Larger Bodies at Golden Heart Yoga in Petworth, DC on Wednesday nights at 7:15 in June and July! I’m so excited (I say that a lot) to start working with Golden Heart Yoga – a neighborhood studio in Petworth.  I originally approached the owner of the studio about teaching general classes (announcement for those coming soon, I hope!) and after chatting about my background and teaching style, she proposed a Yoga for Larger Bodies miniseries this summer.  Serendipitously (is that a word?), the time she suggested was very similar to when my plus size class was held at Blue Heron. It’s almost like it was meant to be!! I really hope those of you who are local will sign up for this opportunity.  It’s very reasonably priced ($45 for 4 classes) and I can’t wait to show you all of the amazing ways the yoga practice can be customized to your body.  If you ever felt like you wanted to try a yoga class but didn’t want to be the only larger yogi in the room, this class is for you.  Do you have a friend who wants to try yoga but feels intimidated? Bring them along!  Guys are welcome too. You can find out all the details on the Golden Heart Yoga website, but here are the dates and description: Wednesdays 6/19/13, 6/26/13, 7/10/13 and 7/17/13 at 7:15pm (it’s a 4 week series with a break for the week of July 4th) Experience all of the benefits of yoga with the pace and postures specifically adapted for your body.   Stretch, strengthen, and...
Why a private or semi-private lesson might be right for you

Why a private or semi-private lesson might be right for you

They’re heeeeeerrreee!!! Take a look at my shiny new Supportive Yoga marketing postcards!  You might recognize the photos and Supportive Yoga logo (hand drawn and painstakingly retouched using Paint software) from the blog. Why yes, that is one of those nifty QR code thingies.  Hopefully it’s shouting, “Please scan me, people!” I’ve been giving these out and placing a few in some local businesses near where I live in order to try to grow my local private and semi-privates session clientele.  After the last *ahem* short-lived studio class experiment ended with no alternatives in sight, I figured I needed to regroup and think about the best way to serve my students.  I know a lot of you are busy, have competing priorities and a certain amount of funds you can spend on yourself.  I also know that a lot of you want to practice yoga but may not think studio classes are a good fit for you. I’ve walked into a lot of yoga studios as a newbie over the years and it can be really intimidating.  There might be a “yoga mafia” – i.e. a club of core students who seem to belong there and who aren’t looking for new members.  You might feel judged by the staff or students because of how you look or what you can and can’t do. Let me assure you that there are studios out there where anyone can feel comfortable, but finding those sanctuaries can be difficult, time consuming and frustrating. You might find a studio that you like, only to take classes where the teacher’s instructions to the room don’t...
New Classes starting this Wednesday!

New Classes starting this Wednesday!

I am so so so excited to announce two new group classes!  After a break in regular classes, I am so happy to be able to offer not one but two weekly classes for you to take with me. The classes will take place at Mamasita Studio in Takoma Park – only one block from the metro.  The studio is in a great location – easy to get to and in a great neighborhood.  I’m so pleased that Supportive Yoga will have a home and am looking forward to offering up a regular class schedule to my amazing yoga students. The classes will be Wednesdays at 5:15pm and Sundays at 12:45pm The studio offers many different kinds of classes, including dance classes and zumba in addition to yoga.  They are trying to expand their yoga offerings and I am so honored to be able to help them with that.  This is where I ask for your help.  If you are local, please come check out my classes.  I really want to create a sustainable yoga class for my students and for the studio, but to do that, I need people to show up.  A little awkward to say, but true.  I promise you will have a good time, laugh and maybe even learn some yoga.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – like the blog? You will love the class. I approach classes with the belief that everyone can practice and accept the benefits of yoga regardless of race, creed, fitness level, body type and gender.  I create a safe space for all to enjoy the...
